The rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) will act on the recent recommendation from the Minister of Superior Education Ligia Amada Melo to dismiss from the university students with more than eight years.

Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet said that he has asked the registrar's office to develop the list of the students that have performed below academic standards and that the university would review their status and decide who could stay in the university. Studies at the UASD are heavily subsidized by taxpayers and cost RD$500 per semester for the majority. Melo had requested the university expel the professional students that she says are taking the places of those who truly want to study.

Febrillet announced the measure during an assembly in which he talked to professors of the school regarding the disturbances that took place last week that closed down the university for four days. One of the leaders of the protestors has been "studying" at the UASD for more than 25 years.
