Senator Felix Bautista (PLD-San Juan de la Maguana) presented a bill in Congress yesterday that calls for the prevention, treatment, penalizing and eradication of violence against women and establishes urgent safety measures to protect the lives of women and their children. So far this year, there have been more than 113 femicides.

Amongst the measures, the bill calls for providing provisional maintenance for abused women as well as temporary care for minors.

The bill also calls for those convicted of femicide to be sentenced to 30 to 40 years in prison and those convicted of domestic abuse, be it physical, emotional or psychological, to be sentenced to 4 to 10 years in prison with a fine from 5 to 20 minimum salaries.

Cyber-violence against women will bring a penalty of 2 months to 3 years in prison and a fine of 2 to 4 minimum salaries and institutional violence, that is entities and public services who discriminate against women or violate their rights, will have to pay a fine of 16 to 100 minimum salaries and 2 to 5 years in jail.
