Adriano Miguel Tejada shares his thoughts today in the Diario Libre editorial about the reasons why if the Dominican Republic has grown 7.2% on average over the past eight years, there is so much unemployment, poverty and unequal distribution of wealth. "The question is relevant because governments come and governments go and the spread increases and the problems just grow bigger," he writes.

In his "humble opinion" the bottom line is that "we are spending the money in the wrong way."

He makes the point that adequate fiscal policy produces good results, and mentions the case of Brazil. And then he looks inward: "We are spending to finance those who do not want to pay for electricity service, the irresponsible unions of transporters, and all those who can lobby their way into the national budget," he writes.

Then, he says, "there is no plan to create jobs. Be this by real incentives with clear goals, adequate financing, or administrative facilities, we have to create the climate so that people take the leap to create jobs," he says.

But then he makes the point: "Here we have spent our lives promoting a culture of leisure. What is intelligent and fun is to make a living goofing off, or in politics or baseball, but not by studying or working. That way, we would not get ahead."

Then he sinks home to a recent decision by the government as to how to spend taxpayer money: "We all applaud that RD$10 million go to who wins a medal at the Olympics [gold medal]. But we should give that money to whoever creates 1,000 jobs. That would be truly making a nation."
