The Ministry of Public Health has announced that the five patients who received heart, kidney and cornea transplants at the Heart Neuro-Ophthalmology and Transplant Center (Cecanot) are all in satisfactory condition.

The director of Cecanot, Dr. Federico Nunez, confirmed that they are all making satisfactory progress having received the organs of a 22-year old who died in a motorcycle accident.

He went on to say that there were at least 14 patients who urgently needed heart transplants, and the National Transplant Coordination Institute (Incort) has said that more people are now coming forward to be donors and that now there are more than 500 people in the country with donor cards.

There is a web site, www.incort.gob.do where people can register to be a donor and at the same time they should advise their families of their wishes, as according to the law 329-98 it is the family that has the final say regarding the donation of organs.

Alexander Altman, assistant to the director of Incort, Dr. Federico Morales Billini, told El Nacional, that although Dominicans knew about the importance of donating organs there was still a lot of negative opinion on the part of the families of the deceased, especially amongst the poorer classes.

According the head of communications at Plaza de la Salud hospital, Dashira Martinez, the patient who had a transplant there last week, Stephany Moreno, aged 22, has sufficiently recovered to be transferred to a normal room, although visits are restricted.
