There is "a new city in the city," focusing in a news report on the four new malls that are opening this year n Agora, Sambil, Galeria 360, all on the John F. Kennedy stretch between Leopoldo Navarro and Abraham Lincoln, says a report in Diario Libre today, 26 July 2012.

The malls, with their concentration of stores and promise of security, are the new city squares. They are also filling the void for children's entertainment. The Diario Libre article acknowledges there is social exclusion when malls concentrate expensive stores, and in many shoe shine boys are asked to leave by security agents.

Neighborhood malls are popular among local residents, but others are known for luxury purchases, such as Blue Mall, or the middle end of the market, such as Plaza Central.

But for the most part it is all just about shopping. "Dominicans are big consumers, they buy all brands and products that are fashionable or new to market and more than in other markets in the Caribbean and Central America", says Silvia Rosales, marketing director for Agora Mall.

Michele De Prisco of Blue Mall forecasts that the city street shops will rent locations in the malls. She explained this happened in Venezuela where the stores previously independently located on city streets, lured by the enhanced security, moved to the malls.
