The Municipality of the National District announced a zoo area is under construction within the park grounds of the National Music Conservatory. This would be the second "zoo" that Mayor Roberto Salcedo undertakes. The first one was the very controversial "Zooberto", where at a cost of RD$11 million, giant monsters were erected at the intersection of the avenues Antonio Duverge and John F. Kennedy.

Ines Aizpun writes in Diario Libre: "Not content with the legacy to the city of the most ugly park in the Western Hemisphere (not enough proof to speak for the Eastern Hemisphere), he proposes to carry out a reform of the Conservatory Park".

Diario Libre on Friday reported that iguanas, monkeys, and birds and animals in danger of extinction would be transfered to the Conservatory from the National Zoo in northern Santo Domingo. At a time when cages are being eliminated from zoos around the world, an iguana park and cages would be built for birds and monkeys.

The National Zoo was built in 1975 and the animals in the former zoo were relocated to an open area in northern Santo Domingo.

Within the new recreational area contemplated by the city government is a bicycle and walking routes. The well-shaded park is already popular with city residents for walks.

Salcedo told Diario Libre the plans are to change the name of the park from Plaza del Conservatorio to Plaza de Iberoamerica.

A commentary on Saturady in Diario Libre makes the point the creation of the new zoo would be a big mistake. The editorialist urges that Salcedo inquire as to the reasons the zoo was relocated in 1975 and mentions that those reasons are still in effect. He mentions night shows take place at the Conservatory Park, the park cannot be closed off to the general public one day in the weak, the high cost of caring for the animals in a separate location by specialized zoo staff.
