He had just been ordained on Saturday and was traveling to Puerto Plata to say his first mass. Salesian priest Victor Martinez Cabrera, 29, died when the SUV in which he was traveling slid down the Jarabacoa highway at around 8:40am Sunday morning. The vehicle fell in the pronounced curves area known as El Puerto, near the Sanctuary to the Virgin of Altagracia. The vehicle was completely destroyed.
Martinez had been ordained on Saturday at the Maria Auxiliadora Parrish in Jarabacoa in a ceremony attended by Monsignor Julio Cesar Corniel Amaro, bishop of Puerto Plata. Martinez had just returned recently to the country after living for many years in Mexico, where he served as a church deacon, as reported in Diario Libre.
Others who also died in the tragedy were driver Manuel Jerez, 56, who was said to have lost control. He was the husband of an aunt of Martinez, Petra Jimenez, 56, who also died. Seriously injured was Mexican Veronica Nunez Acero, 22, hospitalized at the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez in Santiago and 26 year old Anny Patricia Jerez, 27, who was hospitalized at the Hospital Morillo King, in La Vega.
