I say this every year. I have never seen so many white women in one place in all of my travels to the DR. A few years ago someone posted actual cedula photos of these chicas, what a difference some makeup and the right camera makes.

That was me! I got it from a friend that worked in the JCE. And you're right, they're just like any other model types. They look great with the right lighting and makeup.

It would be interesting to know in whose estimation these pallid and unrepresentative specimens typify Dominican female beauty. Obviously the self-declared "European" ruling families would favour them, but what do rank and file Dominicans think?

From my limited experience and conversations at Field of Dreams while watching TV at the bar (the only environment in which I could have a leisurely conversation about such matters) it seems that the general population has also been brainwashed down the decades. Of the dozens of females I saw while staying at FoD for eleven weeks (staff, putas, novias and visiting "civilians") I saw only a handful as pale-skinned as these. They are totally untypical in the north of the island, and still in the minority in Santiago and the capital. But in watching TV programs the only black people I ever saw on the screen were in occasional US features films and sports and news programs. All the Latin program makers (Dominican, Mexican, Colombian, etc) avoided using them. The girls all religiously followed about four different soaps which ran on all through my visit but I don't remember offhand a single black actor with a significant part. And when there were pop and fashion programs on all the girls (who all had various shades of dark skins) admired the "European type" girls' looks. The same in their fashion magazines.

I am not particularly surprised that these girls are favoured for the best jobs as we all know who owns and controls all aspects of life in the DR. What does surprise me is the way the majority of the population go along with it so unquestioningly. I would have thought they would have had their own "counter" heroes, heroines and fashion idols drawn from their own large sections of the community. Perhaps they do and I don't know about them?
