President Leonel Fernandez convened yesterday the National Congress for an extraordinary session that will last until 14 August. Legislators had given priority to the controversial Bill to Regulate the Salaries of the Public Administration and other initiatives. The Senate Commission for Social Security, Labor and Pensions, chaired by Senator Jose Maria Sosa Vasquez (PLD, San Pedro de Macoris), presented a final report in last Wednesday's session.

The legislation establishes a salary of RD$500,000 for the President of the Republic and RD$400,000 for the Vice President. For the presiding judge of the Constitutional Court (TC) it sets a salary of RD$400,000, and for the Superior Electoral Court, RD$350,000. Ministers and the Attorney General of the Republic will now make base salaries of RD$350,000.

Critics say the bill would significantly increase the cost of government to tax payers at no increase whatsoever in efficiency, given that instead of reducing salaries it increases these for many high ranking officers in different branches in government.
