Outgoing President Leonel Fernandez could consolidate and broaden his influence in the Supreme Court of Justice as he convenes the Judicial Council (CNM), which he chairs, for a meeting next Friday to choose a judge for the Supreme Court of Justice. Fernandez's term ends on 16 August.

Fernandez wants to find the replacement for the seat vacated by Jorge Subero Isa, the former Chief Justice, who refused to take his seat as an ordinary judge.

Among those mentioned as Fernandez's candidates are Radhames Jimenez Pena, the current Attorney General, or Presidential Minister Cesar Pina Toribio.

Jimenez Pena worked in Fernandez's small law firm prior to his being elected President, and defended him when there was an attempt to take him to trial during the Mejia administration.

Fernandez can run for President in 2016, while President-elect Danilo Medina is constitutionally banned from seeking consecutive re-election.
