The Dominican Republic is now receiving an economic compensation from the United Nations because it is reducing the emission of greenhouse gases through wind energy and biomass efficiencies. Both cases were filed by private companies.

The Duquesa Land Fill, expected to reduce emissions of CO2 by 392,000 tons, became the first recipient of the carbon credits.

The Quilvio Cabrera Wind Park, located in Pedernales, is expected to be the second one. It will reduce greenhouse gases by more than 11,000 tons of C02 per year.

Economist Andy Dauhajre had commented earlier that the Dominican government should apply for the credits based on the green effect of the construction of the Santo Domingo Metro and the series of overpasses in Santo Domingo by the Brazilian firm, Odebrecht. He estimated these could be a bonus of US$43.2 million over a 20 year period for state finances.
