Sales were minimal on the first bi-national market day since the Haitian government imposed a ban on all Dominican processed meats. This of course comes on the heels of the announcement by the Pro Consumidor agency that some Dominican salamis contain too much sodium nitrate, not enough protein and some even show the presence of e-coli in the product. Local wholesalers for processed meats reported that sales had practically been zero, since out of a supply of some 3,000 pieces of the product, total sales for the day were 50 pieces, a 98% drop.

Calling the government action "irresponsible" because the ProConsumidor agency has not identified which meatpackers are violating the standards, the wholesalers said that the situation needs to be cleared up fast. ProConsumidor says that it does not have authority to release the report to the general public, but that the Ministry of Public Health can do so.

Even the mayor of Dajabon, Miguel Tatis, called for government action, citing his role as the governor of the bi-national market. He said that the losses were in the millions.
