Matias Avelino Castro, the alleged mastermind of the murder of reporter Jose Silvestre, was incarcerated in a jail in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, where he is serving a 30-year sentence for drug trafficking. According to the documentation of the United States federal authorities, he escaped on 31 January 2005, from a police station in Bayamon, using the false identity of Milton Martinez Rodriguez. The accusation against the defendant, drawn up before the Court of Instruction in San Pedro de Macoris, says that in the neighboring island he also used the identities of Joaquin Espinal Almeyda and Jose Contreras, in order to carry out criminal operations related to the illegal trafficking of drugs.

The case file outlines with details that after the escape, he set himself up in Samana and Sabana de la Mar, using his fake identity of Joaquin Espinal Almeyda in order to allegedly renew the drug trafficking activities in the East region.

In spite of the fact that the fugitive allegedly led a group of persons who carried out drug trafficking, he kept a low profile, posing as a businessman based in the province of Samana, although with large interests and commercial operations in the city of Santo Domingo and in the province of San Cristobal. There he used an alleged partner and front man in his money laundering operations, the former Major League baseball player, Jose Rijo.
