The Wall Street Journal today reports on three New Jersey residents who were elected the country's first overseas legislators for the Dominican Republic. The three legislators represent the Dominican diaspora in the United States, minus Florida, and Canada. Two other legislators represent Dominican communities in Miami, the Caribbean, Latin America, and two others were chosen for Europe in the 20 May presidential election. The overseas legislator positions were created in the 2010 Constitution.

The WSJ article explains that Alfredo Rodriguez, who one the seat on the PLD ticket, owns a supermarket in Newark. Ruben Luna, 49, who owns 10 supermarkets and lives in Paramus and Jose Morel, 53, a Newark bus drivers, were elected on the PRD opposition ballot.

Dominicans are getting more politically involved in the state, Ramona Hernandez, director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at City College of New York, told WSJ to explain how come three from New Jersey were the most voted.

Among the issues that could be addressed are the fees when wiring money to the DR. Hernandez told the WSJ that Dominicans sent US$3.4 billion in transfers. Other issues that concern Dominicans are the cost of paperwork and documentation at the consulates and embassy, as well as the high taxes on airline tickets.

Luna told WSJ they plan on going once or twice a month, and are hoping to use Skype.
