The Dominican Republic women's volleyball team (ranked 11th) was only able to grab one set off Russia but still has three more games to go. The Russians (ranked 9th in the world) would win the game 23-25, 15-25, 26-24, 22-25.

Moreso, the Dominican team charmed the crowds at the Earls Court venue in London with their passing style. As reported in the London Olympics official website, in the game they lost 3-0 to Russia the Dominican team had the near full house crowd on their side. The report makes the point the British crowds had watched the home team lose to the Russians 3-0 the day before. The London Olympics sports writer called the Dominican team "vibrant", and makes the point the Dominican team almost took the fourth set, but lost to the "experience and sheer size of the Russians."

The report makes the point that the Dominicans played with a "free flowing and flamboyant style" that had spectators on their feet with their passes, "in stark contrast to the all-out hitting of the Russians."

What most impressed the sportswriter, though, "was the on-court emotion and exuberance of Bethania de la Cruz and teammates that helped them garner the support of the crowds at the venue".

In the game, Bethania de la Cruz was the top-scorer of the match with match-high 26 points. Candida Arias and team captain Milagros Cabral also finished with double-figure score of 17 and 16, respectively.
