President Leonel Fernandez inaugurated the San Luis Community College (ITSC), located in eastern Santo Domingo on Monday 30 July. The technical training center will cater to students who live east of the Ozama River, enabling them to continue their studies without having to cross to the National District. Around one million people live in eastern Santo Domingo. The community college was built at a cost of more than RD$1.8 billion.

There are 14 buildings in the complex that has a capacity for 15,000 students.

Short courses are available in microelectronics, informatics, robotics, mechanical technology, industrial technology, electronic engineering technology, industrial and domestic electricity, interior decorating, landscaping, food handling and conservation, plumbing, refrigeration, culinary arts, industrial cooking, bartender, dental technology, physical therapy, tourism guide, plastic arts, languages, hotel and tourism, photography, nursing, x rays, theater, networks, telecommunications and microchips.

"Today is a memorable day because we are introducing a new higher learning model that has been very successful abroad, based on the community college in the United States," said the President during the inauguration.

President Fernandez was accompanied by Vice President-elect, First Lady Margarita Cedeno and Vice President Rafael Alburquerque. He said he trusted that his successor, President-elect Danilo Medina would continue the program.
