A new system for calculating poverty, created by national institutions in the Dominican Republic with international support was presented last night, Tuesday 30 July at the Presidential Palace in Santo Domingo.

The Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development said that the new methodology was the product of a consensus between the National Statistics Office (ONE), the Central Bank, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the World Bank.

Recent figures show that the incidence of poverty in the Dominican Republic has decreased from 49.4% in 2004 to 39.9% during the period 2010-2011. This compares with approximately 34% under the former system used by the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) and the World Bank and 41.4% with the ECLAC system.

The research also revealed that 9% of the population is suffering from abject poverty, compared to 15.4% in 2004.

Minister of Economy Temistocles Montas highlighted that in the past there were several different figures about poverty levels in the Dominican Republic that were confusing to the population, which was echoed ONE director Pablo Tactuk.

Juan Carlos Feres, responsible for social statistics for ECLAC, said that poverty was one of the key themes on the agendas of organizations involved in development planning.

Economist Javier Baez, from the poverty reduction group at the World Bank emphasized the importance of measuring poverty in Latin America and said that the new methodology would enable a better understanding of the socio-economic factors that made up the poverty profiles.
