Two weeks before the end of the Fernandez administration, the Customs Department has ordered a ban on the importation of used clothes entering via Dominican ports.

Juan Morfa, vice president of the Cargo Consolidators Organization that includes used clothes importers, said that the measure has been taken unilaterally and will affect more than two million Dominicans who live overseas and ship used clothes to their relatives.

He said that clothes that come in barrels and boxes are not covered under law 458-73, which prohibits the entry of used clothes, but in his opinion only refers to clothes for commercial use, not those being sent to families. He said the importers who are members of the Association currently have around 300 containers with boxes and tanks containing used items in port.

Morfa said that he hoped to meet with the customs authorities to reach an agreement and so that they could explain why they have taken this measure.

The DGA, quoted in Diario Libre would only say that the prohibition applied to all used clothes with no further details.
