The Federal Trade Commission has said that it has taken action against a Dominican mortgage assistance operation that allegedly cheated Spanish-speaking homeowners in the US out of more than US$2 million.

The scam operators allegedly offered homeowners a mortgage modification within 30 to 90 days, in exchange for a one-time advance fee of US$995 to US$1,500.

The FTC said homeowners received little, if anything, of value from the Dominican operation. "And what they did receive, they could have gotten for themselves for free," the agency said in a statement.

The agency charged David F. Preiner of Minnesota with a half-dozen violations of various federal laws, including falsely representing himself as an affiliate of the US government. Preiner allegedly owns six companies named as corporate defendants in the scam, including Grupo Marketing Dominicana, based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
