The institutions that are researching the quality of the nation's salamis following recent allegations have incurred a series of violations of international agreements to which the Dominican Republic is a signatory, because they have not revealed the names of the brands concerned. Several experts in the field were consulted by El Caribe and reported that the DR-CAFTA agreement requires phyto-sanitary transparency in cases like the current one dealing with salami and they must notify the other countries of a possible threat to the health of their consumers. They said quite frankly that agencies like Pro Consumidor could not hide behind confidentiality that is granted by article 121 of the Consumer Rights Protection law. They pointed out that when there is a problem in one country this country needed to publicize it and notify the World Trade Organization.
