Dominican Republic state hydroelectric generator Egehid has completed a US$22.8 million project to overhaul the 98MW Jiguey hydro in the upper basin of the Nizao River in San Cristobal province, Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) reported.
CDEEE also announced the startup of the 56MW Aguacate hydroelectric plant over the coming months. Both plants were affected by storms Olga and Noel in 2007.
Also expected to contribute to the national electricity grid soon, German power company JRC Electronic's 54MW solar project in Monte Plata province is due to be ready to enter into operation in the first quarter next year. The National Energy Commission announced that of 198,000 panels, 2,000 have already been installed for production of 30 megawatts.
In October 2011, upon making the announcement of the installation of the US$120 million project, Celso Marranzini said that energy would be purchased for the grid at US$0.19 kWh. JRC plans three other solar plants in provinces San Pedro de Macoris, San Cristobal and Santiago that would boast a combined 150MW and could be expanded to 200MW, according to the report.
Power-Eng.com reports that in the Dominican Republic, fuel oil-fired generation accounts for 44.2% of the 1.22TWh produced in June 2012, followed by natural gas (31.1%), coal (12%), hydro (11.7%) and wind (1.1%).
The top generators in the month were AES Andres (15.6%, 191GWh), CDEEE (15.1%, 185GWh), EGE Haina (11.8%, 145GWh), Egehid (11.7%, 143GWh), EGE Itabo (9.85%, 120GWh), Seaboard Transcontinental Capital (9.37%, 114GWh), Dominican Power Partner (9.26%, 113GWh) and Generadora Palamara-La Vega (8.64%, 106GWh).
