On Thursday, 2 August, President Leonel Fernandez inaugurated the Los Palmeros Park at the kilometer 14 of the Las Americas highway, a subsidized cafeteria in Villa Olimpica, a sports area in El Tamarindo and a housing project, all in eastern Santo Domingo.

The Los Palmeros Park is a monument to honor freedom fighters Amaury German Aristy, Virgilio Perdomo, Ulises Cern, Bienvenido Leal Prandy. They were killed by government troops near the site of the park on 12 January 1972, on grounds that they sought to overthrow the Balaguer regime.

The cafeteria, according to Nicolas Calderon, director of the state subsidized cafeterias can serve more than 18,000 meals a day, and includes a seated area for 120 people.
