The administrator of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Michele Leonhart confirmed the United States commitment to strengthen the war against drugs upon receiving a decoration to the Order of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella in the rank of Great Officer from President Leonel Fernandez at the Presidential Palace on 3 August 2012. Leonhart is visiting for talks with high-ranking government officers of the Fernandez and President-elect Danilo Medina teams.
In the final days of the Fernandez administration, new developments have been made public regarding increased US government support for the local battle against drugs. Leonhart's visit comes less than a month after that of Janet Napolitano, the US Secretary of Homeland Security, who was here for signing of several agreements to strengthen cooperation against drug trafficking.
There is speculation as to what may be coming in matters of fighting the war on drugs with the start of the Medina government on 16 August. The narcotics trade is said to be the main reason for the rising crime now affecting the Dominican Republic.
