View Full Version : Santiago province may have new municipalities

The Council for the Strategic Development of Santiago (CDES) and the Provincial Government will meet on Monday to receive and evaluate proposals regarding the further geopolitical division of the province of Santiago.

The activity, according to CDES president, Carlos Fondeur, will look at the challenges and opportunities for creating new municipalities and municipal districts.

Santiago governor Raul Martinez said political parties, deputies and social sectors from the various communities, municipal districts and municipalities of Santiago province would participate in the forum.

On 22 October 2011, deputies Altagracia Gonzalez and Maximo Castro Silverio submitted a bill proposing to create the municipality of Santiago West that would be in the Cienfuegos area.

At present Santiago province has 9 municipalities and 16 municipal districts covering an area of 2,808 square kilometers. The largest is San Jose de las Matas, 1,518 square kilometers, some 54% of the whole province.

Santiago, the city, has 5 municipal districts and covers 480.7 square kilometers, of which 91 kms are urban. 75% of the total population of the province is concentrated there.
