The National Judicial Council (CNM) chose career judge Francisco Ortega Polanco to the vacant 17th Supreme Court of Justice position on Friday, 3 August. The choice has been met with good reviews, on the grounds that Ortega is a career judge. Listin Diario reports that he is seen as an honest and qualified judge who has made his way up the judicial ranks. Ortega replaces the former president of the Supreme Court of Justice Jorge Subero Isa, who turned down the appointment.
Polanco was praised by the president of the Dominican Republic College of Lawyers (CARD), Jose Fernando Perez Volquez, who described him as a judge who has brought dignity to all the positions he has held, in the prosecutors office, as an instruction judge, first instance judge and currently as appeals court judge. "He is a very responsible judge, very capable, with extraordinary qualities and a solid academic background," said Perez Volquez.
Trajano Vidal Potentini of Finjus, the Justice and Transparency Foundation, highlighted Ortega Polanco's training and honesty on the job.
At the time of his appointment, Ortega Polanco was the presiding judge of the first penal hall of the Court of Appeals of the National District.
Prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeals he had also worked as a reporter in several media outlets, and was the creator of Hoy newspaper's "La Esquina Joven" section aimed at young audiences.
Cesar Pina Toribio, legal advisor to President Leonel Fernandez and spokesman for the CNM said that Ortega Polanco's selection was unanimous after being proposed by Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martinez.
Ortega will be sworn in next week.
President Leonel Fernandez presided the selection that took place at the Presidential Palace on Friday evening, 3 August. There had been speculation that he would appoint a judge to further consolidate his influence in the branches of government. In an editorial on Sunday, Listin Diario said that Ortega Polanco is not known for political links.
