The Dominican women's volleyball team defeated Great Britain and Algeria over the weekend to qualify for the quarterfinals. This is the first time the DR has advanced to the top eight. In Athens 2004, the DR ended eleventh overall, defeating the US team that finished twelfth.
Ranked twelfth, the DR defeated Great Britain, 69th in the world, 25-9, 25-18 and 25-19, at the Earls Court in the London Olympics. The first game just lasted 20 minutes.
The top Dominican Republic players were Bethania de la Cruz, 12, Prisilla Rivera, 10, team captain Milagros Cabral 9 and Annery Vargas, 8. Lynne Beattie for Great Britain made 11 points.
The Dominican Republic then faced Algeria on Sunday, 5 August. Algeria, ranked 16th in the world, lost 25-15, 25-16, 25-13 to the Dominican women. The DR will next go up against the US team, ranked No. 1 in the world, tomorrow, Tuesday, 7 August.
