President Leonel Fernandez cut the symbolic ribbon for the opening of the renovated National Library Pedro Henriquez Urena in the grounds of the Plaza de la Cultura cultural center yesterday, Monday 6 August. He was accompanied by First Lady and Vice President-elect Margarita Cedeno, Minister of Culture Jose Rafael Lantigua and Library director Diomedes Nunez Polanco, among others.

"A library today is not only for storing physical books, but it is also about having access to digital information. It is now known as the Library 2.0," said Fernandez.

The library's book inventory has been enhanced with the donation of several private collections, a research hall, newspapers room, virtual library hall, Internet access hall, children's library section, special collections and legacy section, room for simultaneous translations, book store, meeting rooms, cafeteria and archive. The installations take up 5,500 square meters in three buildings: one central building and two others, each with four floors. The library has been fitted with a modern auditorium, ideal for congresses, workshops, concerts and cultural activities.

In the official release on the renovation of the National Library the Presidency does not reveal the cost of the project. Hoy newspaper recently reported that the renovation of the Library was originally contracted for RD$88.8 million but ended up costing an additional RD$1.3 billion.

The renovation was the responsibility of the Supervisory Office of Public Works of the Presidency (OISOE).
