During their session today, Tuesday 7 August, the Chamber of Deputies is hurrying to listen to and vote on a legislative proposal that will regulate salaries for state employees, an initiative that the Senate passed in an urgent vote last Thursday, 2 August. The legislative proposal, which has generated widespread debate regarding its constitutionality, will be on the agenda that the deputies will deal with, starting at 10am. The legislation establishes a salary limit for the President of the Republic of RD$450,000 per month, for the head of the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies, the Supreme Court of Justice and the Constitutional Tribunal, RD$400,000; the presiding magistrate of the Superior Electoral Tribunal, RD$375,000; the head of the Chamber of Accounts, RD$350,000; the ministers, the Attorney General, the Presidential Legal Council and the Controller General, RD$300,000 and the Public Defender, RD$250,000.

The law limits the use of credit cards charged to the State to the President and Vice President of the Republic, the presidents of the legislative chambers, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice and the heads of agencies that are of a constitutional origin. The legislation contains principles of conflicts of interest and incompatibility, such as public officials not being able to receive any remunerations from the state, apart from that which comes from their job, and they cannot exercise any other functions that imply the payment of benefits or remunerations coming from other sources, except teaching, cultural activities, sports or research.
