Investigative television journalist Nuria Piera recently commissioned tests on local salami products from two local laboratories and what they found was pretty much in line with what ProConsumidor, the consumer protection agency found at the beginning of the year. According to El Caribe, Nuria contracted the Seralle and the Agroempresarial laboratories to look at products from several meat packers which she named, unlike ProConsumidor, which has not specified which brands were involved: Sosua, Fud, Induveca, Checo, Don Lindo, Frio Carne, Agrotel, Stefanutti, First Select and Popular del Cerro.
All of the products had lower levels of protein than stipulated by the National Quality Control Institute (Digenor), as well as lower fat content. Piera said that what was really needed was to send samples to laboratories outside of the country for analysis because local labs do not have all of the sophisticated equipment needed for a complete study. One positive element of these new studies was the absence of any e.coli bacteria in the samples.
