The average cost of books and school supplies for a family with children in private, middle-class schools is between RD$10,000 and RD$25,000 per child. In the case of school texts, the prices vary according to the publisher, the number of books and the grade. Looking at several book lists that are handed out by these schools to the parents, Diario Libre found itself with one for a mother of three children in a private, middle class school who will be studying in the first and fourth grade and the third year of high school. In the first case, she has to buy seven books with prices ranging between RD$300 and RD$800.

In the second case, the school gave her a list of textbooks that she will need to buy at a cost of RD$7,400, with a 4% discount. The high school student will need 14 books, of which they gave him seven, and she spent RD$5,000 on five of the books and still has to acquire two more. She explained that she has spent RD$35,000, including supplies and school uniforms. This is the situation that most Dominican families must face before 20 August when classes start. Regarding the textbooks, the Ministry of Education (Minerd) has ratified that the textbooks approved based on the criteria of Ordinance 6-03 are still usable until there is a new evaluation and preparation of new texts.
