The family of Casandra Damiron, after whom the local show business Oscar-type awards are named, has requested their mother's name be withdrawn from the awards.

In a published document, the family says that in recent years the awards have distanced themselves from the guidelines in matters of content and essence. They pointed to the absence of several musical genres and the awarding of prizes to emerging artists, even those who have been involved in scandals.

A list of requirements has been submitted. Apparently there are also monetary issues. Diario Libre reports that one aspect of the controversy is that originally the awards were not created for third parties to profit. The show business awards were to be sponsored by the Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana that would have the right to promote their products. Now the family claims that a third party is profiting, beyond the CND and the Show Business Writers Association (Acroarte). A meeting has been scheduled to discuss the petition by the family.

The awards have helped keep the memory of the famous merengue promoter alive.
