According to a press release, Minister of Foreign Relations Carlos Morales Troncoso will travel to Washington, D.C. to meet with Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security on Friday, 10 August to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to increase air transport security.

The agreement is aimed at implementing an Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) in the country, which would allow for the exchange of information on passengers traveling from one country to another, to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking, terrorism and organized crime.

Morales Troncoso said that the agreement will make it possible for information on passengers to be available to any of the signatory countries before the plane takes off and also will enable the sharing of best practices to strengthen the personnel of the Ministry of Interior and Police, the National Investigations Department and the Customs Department.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations describes the agreement as a significant step in the improving cooperation on security matters with the United States.

The chief executives from the three private airport companies at Punta Cana, La Romana and Santiago will attend the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding.

During Napolitano's visit to the Dominican Republic in June, three declarations were signed with the objective of strengthening the fight against the trade in people, the security of the global supply chain and civil aviation.
