The European Union (EU) has agreed to back Dominican education to the tune of EUR 45.5 million (US$56.3 million) by increasing the program of bilateral cooperation.

The EU has also earmarked EUR15.5 million (US$19.2 million) to back local authorities and private parties, reports Listin Diario.

Irene Horejs, the EU representative in the country and the national coordinator of the European Development Fund program, Domingo Jimenez made the announcement yesterday, Tuesday 7 August.

The resources have been approved following an in-depth analysis on the needs of the Dominican Republic. The sign-off on the Education Support Program is expected to happen before the end of the year.

The objective of the program is to support the improvement of the quality of education, especially at primary level.

The program to support local government involves the professionalization of municipal administration and will support development initiatives between local government and civil society.
