According to El Nuevo Diario, the deputy director for the Transport Reorganization Office, (OPRET), engineer Leonel Carrasco, admits that various circumstances, including the economy, are preventing the expected completion of the second Metro line during the present administration.
Whilst he did not specify the amount, he assured that "a lot" of money was lacking to finish the work, although he did say that the line was more than 90% complete.
Carrasco said that stations number 18,19 and 20, at the Josefa Brea Street intersection with Padre Castellanos, Julio del Orbe Street and the intersection of Av. Mella with Padre Castellanos were not finished for a variety of reasons, but that they hoped to be able to complete the work.
As far as the investment so far was concerned, he would only say that the civil engineering part had cost over RD$10 billion.
The first line of the Metro from Villa Mella to La Feria has transported 85 million passengers to date, and generated RD$1.7 billion in revenues, said Carrasco.
However in the three years the Metro has been operational, the government has subsidized it to the tune of RD$1.7 billion. The Opret deputy director said every passenger is subsidized by US$0.50 or RD$19.
