Owners of airport duty free shops plan to ask President Leonel Fernandez to intervene to prevent the continuation of hostilities that they attribute to the executives of Aerodom, the private operators of the Las Americas International Airport.

The businesspeople, in a group called the Association of Tax-Free Commercial Outlets (ATZF), want President Fernandez to visit the airport to see for himself the terrible conditions the shops are in as a result of the conflict with Aerodom.

ATZF president Corina Capriles and vice-president Miguel Angel Simon said that the businesses have been operating since 1955 protected by the law and the Constitution, despite what they describe as "systematic abuse" by Aerodom.

They said that they have been blocked from remodeling their areas, and are sometimes forced to close arbitrarily. This causes a lack of sales and prevents their normal business operation. They believe that the objective is to close them down to enable Aerodom to have a total monopoly on the stores in the airport terminals across the country.

They state that they only want to be treated equally and to have the opportunity to compete and run successful businesses and accused Aerodom of breaking anti- monopolistic laws and laws relating to duty free shops.

They say that Resolution 121-99 in Art. 6 of the concession contract orders the concessionaires to respect previous contracts and grants them the first option for contract renewals.

The businesses affected by Aerodom's alleged actions include Bombon, Bolero, Mosphere Bar, Tropic's Snack Bar, Capriles, D'Carlo, Coralina's Snack Bar, Natasha, Caribbean Coffee, Cristian's, Deli Gourmet, Sol y Luz, Yarey and Francis.
