Yesterday morning, Tuesday 7 August, a policeman and three civilians were injured during violent street protests against the blackouts in Gurabo in Santiago.

The police officer, who suffered head injuries after being hit by a stone, was taken to Jose Maria Cabral and Baez regional hospital.

The protesters said that they had not had electricity for six days because the Northern Electricity distribution company (Edenorte) had removed a transformer from the local area.

During the protests several electric meters recently installed by Edenorte were destroyed and traffic was blocked at Gregorio Luperon highway where they burned tires and threw rubble.

The situation was controlled by an armed police contingent, as reported in Diario Libre.
