Dominican Yulis Gabriel Mercedes, competing in his second Olympic Games, surprisingly lost to Yemen wild card Tameem Mohammed Ahmed Al-Kubati 8-3 in the 58kg division on 8 August, failing to move up to the qualifying rounds of the taekwondo competitions. As reported in Diario Libre, he was injured in the knee in the final round that he was winning 3-1.
Mercedes had hoped to win the Dominican Republic's seventh Olympic medal, and his own second. He won silver in the 58kg division at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
