La Vega deputy Aridio Vasquez says that President Leonel Fernandez has been "deaf and blind" to protesters against the concession granted by the government for the exploitation of Loma Miranda by Xstrata Nickel, the same company that operates Falcondo in Bonao. He said President Fernandez had been indifferent, while sectors in La Vega, including the Catholic Church, are struggling to stop the exploitation of the mountain.

Vasquez said that Fernandez would be making a historic mistake if he leaves government without resolving the conflict over the exploitation of Loma Miranda. He said that Fernandez wants to "leave the dead man" to his successor, Danilo Medina.

He urged Fernandez to call for a review of the agreement signed by the government and the company, on the grounds that the exploitation of what he calls "the only ecological lung in the Central Cibao" would cause disastrous damage to the environment, affecting vital water sources that begin in the Loma de Miranda.
