The assistant director of the free newspaper, Diario Libre, Ines Aizpun has written a long article in today's edition, Thursday 9 August, in which she challenges some of the discussions that are swirling about the Xstrata Nickel mining operations at Loma Miranda. The editor points out three areas of discussion: Water, economic value and the recovery of the mined out areas. She noted that the discussions are becoming more heated by the day.

Regarding water, the Xstrata Nickel environmental impact report was delivered in March, but in July the Minister of the Environment did not admit its arrival. Apparently, according to Ines Aizpun, this is because of the proximity of 16 August when the new administration is sworn in. On the question of economic feasibility, the Academy of Science issued a statement saying that they doubted that it was feasible. The third issue was the recovery of the land, where Xstrata Nickel pointed out the reforestation that had been done in the Bonao mining areas, and the environmentalists citing the 20 to 25 years that it takes to fully recover. Aizpun suggested a three-way dialogue to begin.
