An accused thief was shot and killed inside a house on Benito Juarez Street in Villa Olga in Santiago de los Caballeros on Wednesday, 8 August. The man, aged about 29, was known only as "El Gacho" and had run into the house at #7 trying to evade a police patrol that was pursuing him for an alleged robbery on nearby Juan Pablo Duarte Avenue. He was shot and killed in the house.
Domingo Cabrera, the prosecutor for homicide cases told Diario Libre that he did not recall the real name of El Gacho, but he knew him by sight because he had processed him several times in the past. According to local police records there were 17 citations on the man's rap sheet. At least 10 robberies and assaults were reported in the area over the past week, which explained the presence of the police patrol.
