The Dominican Republic 4x400m relay team, seen as the country's last chance for a medal in the Olympics, was disqualified during the qualifying heat on Thursday, 9 August for a relay takeover outside the takeover zone during their second changeover. They later had an appeal rejected. They had achieved the time for qualifying, but their place in the final, which takes place on Friday, 10 August, went to Venezuela.

The news comes as a major disappointment. The relay team was considered to have a good chance of winning another medal for the DR as it included Felix Sanchez (gold in 400m hurdles) and Luguelin Santos (silver in 400m).

Past winners of medals in the Olympics for the Dominican Republic have been:

Pedro Nolasco, Los Angeles 1984. Bantamweight, boxing. Bronze.

Felix Sanchez, Athens 2004 Athens. 400m hurdles. Gold

Luguelin Santos, London 2012. 400m. Silver.
