The Senate has rejected the changes the Chamber of Deputies made to the Bill to Regulate Dominican State Salaries.

Senator Jose Maria Sosa (San Pedro de Macoris) and Reinaldo Pared Perez (National District) reminded the Senate that the Constitution clearly states that one may not legislate for one's own benefit. The deputies had modified the bill to ensure they kept many of their current privileges that the bill seeks to regulate. Sosa, who is the president of the Social Security and Labor Commission, added that that the bill received a severe blow when the deputies changed the wording of the bill to allow Congress members to regulate themselves.

The senators reincorporated the article that prohibits government employees from receiving other benefits for their job. Diario Libre speculates this means per-diems and the so-called social fund or "barrilito", with hundreds of thousands in discretionary funds.

Sosa said that if the Senate agreed to the change proposed by the deputies then other organizations such as the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court should have access to the proposed self-regulation.

The 26 Senators who were present unanimously approved the revisions to the Deputies' amendments and the bill now returns to the Chamber of Deputies.

The deputies need to pass the bill before 14 August for it to be passed in this legislature, prior to the start of the Medina government on 16 August.
