As the peak of the hurricane season begins for the Atlantic Basin and Caribbean, the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has raised its estimates on the number of potential hurricanes for the rest of the season.

During a teleconference, the expert forecasters from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said that the updated outlook still indicates a 50% chance of a near-normal season, but increases the chance of an above-normal season to 35% and decreases the chance of a below-normal season to only 15% from the initial outlook issued in May.

They expect between 12 and 17 tropical storms, of which between five and eight might convert into hurricanes. The season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the peak for the Caribbean historically being September.

According to expert Gerry Bell, two or three of the storms are expected to convert into major hurricanes, of intensity between three and five on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Up to now there have been six tropical storms this season, two of which have become hurricanes n Chris and Ernesto.
