President Leonel Fernandez formally inaugurated the renovation works at the Villa Consuelo farmers market in Santo Domingo on Thursday 9 August. The RD$450 million facelift was jointly carried out by the National District Municipality (ADN) and the Supervisory Office of Public Works of the Presidency (OISOE). Santo Domingo mayor Roberto Salcedo and Luis Sifre of OISOE accompanied President Fernandez at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. They said the 11,921 square meter structure is now one of the most modern wholesale food markets in Latin America. It is divided into sections for fish, meat and poultry, flowers and spices, vegetables, grains, fruits, botanicals and others. It has a 930.44 square meter basement, a first level with 4,558 square meters, a second level with 3,708.65 square meters, a mezzanine for administration with 255.72 square meters and outside areas distributed over 2,467.54 square meters.
It also features a cold storage room for meat, a food handling room, a security office, and parking and waste disposal areas.
The market is located at Calle Manuela Diez at the corner with Arzobispo Valera. It is open Monday to Saturday, 6am to 6pm, and on Sundays from 6am to 12 noon.
