On Saturday, 11 August President Leonel Fernandez inaugurated the Palomino Hydroelectric Central built at a reported cost of US$400 million. The plant, which will increase hydroelectric generation capacity by 15%, has the potential of contributing 80 megawatts to the national electrical grid. It was built by Brazilian firm Odebrecht and financed by loans from Brazilian banks.
The executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) Celso Marranzini and the administrator of the state hydroelectric company (EGEHID), Victor Ventura, also attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Ventura said that the hydroelectric plant operates with two turbines that generate four megawatts each, fed by the waters of the Yaque del Sur and Blanco rivers. The plant is located between the provinces of San Juan de la Maguana and Azua in the southwest.
The government reports the plant will reduce costs by US$40 million with savings of 400,000 barrels of petrol imports a year.
The engineering project includes the construction of a reservoir at La Boca de los Rios with a storage capacity of 3.3 million cubic meters of water.
