The president of the Dominican Society of Gastroenterology, Dr. Pascal Nunez says that the increase in dengue was caused by the inadequate storage of water that creates the conditions for the reemergence of the disease at times of heavy rains.

"Prevention is the main way to fight dengue. Efforts have to be made to prevent the mosquito that transmits the disease from breeding," he said. He said that the Ministry of Public Health was working in six communities in the Cibao region where there has been an outbreak of the tropical disease that caused the death of a one-and-a-half-year-old girl.

The regional director of Public Health in the northwest, Felipe Amaro said that while 70 cases were detected in Esperanza, the situation has been controlled. He said that educational talks and site inspections to eliminate water collection containers, as well as mosquito net and chlorine distributions had helped control the outbreak.
