A man identified as M.D. Bautista has been arrested in Sosua for posing as a police colonel, Diario Libre reports. He is accused of fraud against Dominican and foreign citizens. When arrested, he was in possession of a Taurus 38 caliber gun without legal documentation. He was arrested after he showed up at a construction project belonging to a Belgian citizen, Ulrich Van Herpe. He was asking for RD$125,000 or else he would order the repatriation of several Haitian laborers who did not have passports or work permits. He also threatened to deport Van Herpe, claiming that he was subject to an international arrest warrant.

It was later revealed that Bautista had blackmailed several other builders in the area with threats of halting their construction projects for lack of the appropriate permits.

The Police invited others who may have been victims to come forth to identify the man who posed as a police colonel.
