President Leonel Fernandez inaugurated the remodeled Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago Apostol yesterday, Monday 13 August. The work was carried out by the Supervising Office of State Projects at a cost of RD$380 million. The President was accompanied by Armed Forces Minister Lieutenant General Jose Joaquin Virgilio Perez, Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua, and other officials. The project was blessed by the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Santiago, Bishop Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio, who thanked the government for rebuilding the cathedral.

Fernandez said that he was delighted and satisfied with the completion of the Cathedral restoration and remodeling. "This is a sacred temple, where the people of Santiago come to pray to God, and at the same time it is an architectural work of great importance and a historical and cultural monument," said Fernandez. Later on the President handed over the cathedral plans to Archbishop De la Rosa y Carpio, who responded by handing the President a handmade cloth flag of the Dominican Republic. During the ceremony architect Cesar Feris Iglesias, who led the remodeling work together with a team of engineers, also addressed the President and the bishops.

The Apostolic Nuncio of the Vatican in the country, Joseph Wesolowski, and Bishops Jose Dolores Grullon, Nicanor Pena, Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado and other figures also attended the event. The President then went to the exclusive sector of Los Cerros de Gurabo where he attended a private luncheon at the house of businessman Manuel Estrella.
