The First Lady Office was awarded the "Access to Learning 2012" prize from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation yesterday, Monday 13 August. The prize is given to help reduce the digital and learning gap through the Community Technological Centers (CTC's), located in poor rural and urban areas. According to a press release from the First Lady's Office, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave the prize of one million dollars to First Lady Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez, who said that the funds would be used to build and equip additional Community Technological Centers and in this way increase recruitment of members of poorer communities, through the Social Cabinet which she will coordinate as Vice President starting next week.

The "Access to Learning 2012" prize also covers the donation of US$18 million in software for the CTCs, which Microsoft will deliver as part of its commitment to the world population to take the benefits of technology to every community. "The CTCs create a legacy, promote the individual and collective development of the community and its neighbors. The CTCs use technology as a tool to overcome poverty and help the people be more productive, innovative and competitive," said Cedeno de Fernandez.
