Like a phoenix, the Fishermen's Village in Las Terrenas has been ceremonially re-opened by the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia, just three months after it burnt to the ground. The new structure, which has five small walkways, is equipped with bathrooms and water, electricity and gas. According to El Caribe, the project to rebuild the area cost RD$60 million and will house the 14 commercial units that made up the traditional village that burned down on 7 May. The village was built with funds from the ministry. The architect said that they preserved the "bohemian and historical memory" of the original village, although the new replacement is more elegant. The village provides some 200 direct and 100 indirect jobs.
